The San Diego County Fair returns after a 2-year hiatus. While it is predominantly a celebration of Americana, international-style food and performances are always part of the mix. This year Los Tigres del Norte, Ramon Ayala, and La Adictiva are slated to perform (at an additional cost for concert tickets). The Wailers, Outlaw Mariachi, and "Experience Selena" will perform at no additional cost.
Our listings continue to have a multitude of theatrical offerings. Current and opening shows include: The Taming of the Shrew at the Old Globe, In Every Generation by the San Diego Rep, In the Heights at the San Diego Musical Theatre, Mala (again, some of the shows will be in Spanish) at the Old Globe, and Mud Row at the Old Town Theatre, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in Temecula. The Musical Lempicka will open at UCSD on Tuesday. Shorter-run theatrical shows are mentioned below.
The San Diego International Fringe Festival is in full swing. All tickets are $10, and almost all the performances are being held either at the Centro Cultural de la Raza or the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre, both of which are in Balboa Park. Tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night, the Visionary Dance Theatre will stage the dance production Half Black, Half Mexican Gay Mormon Boy from Ogden, Utah.
Tonight Teatro San Diego’s production of Songs for a New World begins with weekend performances until June 26th.
Saturday, the 24th Annual Conference on Raza Prisoners and Colonialism will be held at the Malcolm X Library. The 8th Annual Fundraiser for Chicano Park will take place at the Chicano Art Gallery in Barrio Logan. Eight-time Grammy Award winning reggae band leader Stephen Marley will perform at Humphrey's by the Bay.
Sunday, there will be a Native American Indian Flute Circle at Mission Trails Park. The House of Philippines will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. Tejano band Intocable will perform at the Balboa Theatre.
Monday at the Mingei the Filipino film Mariquina will screen. There will be a Milonga Performance and Workshop at Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park.
Tuesday, at Bread & Salt there will be an opening fundraiser for a 4-day Ukrainian Artists Exhibition. The organizers say that all the proceeds from purchases of art work and donations will be sent directly to Ukrainian families in need.
Wednesday, the film Mr. Arkadin will be shown at the Coronado Library. That same evening the film Everything Everywhere All at Once will be screened atop the Hyatt downtown.
Thursday, another Kamishibai Storytime will be held at the Mission Valley Library. At the Balboa Park Hall of Nations, there will be a panel discussion on A History of How World Expos Changed Our Lives. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will present an online streaming of Lontano Lontano (Citizens of the World). There will be a presentation and book signing by French author Nirina Ralantoaritsimba at Alliance Francaise. Tango at the Marina will feature two accomplished dancers from Buenos Aires, Martin Almiron and Denise Martin. World music multi-instrumentalist Poranguí will perform with Ashley Klein at Music Box.
Next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Everything Everywhere All at Once will be screened at Cinema Under the Stars in Mission Hills.
Next Friday there will be the Help Ukraine Now Fundraiser at Liberty Station. Mariela Contreras will perform at the Museum of Making Music. Both Santana and Earth, Wind and Fire will perform at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista. The Center for World Music in partnership with the Mingei International Museum will present Flamenco with La Chimi, but tickets are now sold out.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the annual San Diego Greek Festival will be held at St. Spyridon.
Next Saturday, the House of Puerto Rico will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. A Juneteenth Summer Celebration of Culture will be held at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Center. As they have done for more than 30 years, the North County NAACP will be hosting a Juneteenth Celebration in downtown Oceanside. The Chinese Historical Museum will host a virtual talk by Russell Low on his book The All American Crew. The Culinary Historians of San Diego will present It’s Boba Time: Adapting to Change with Professor Yong Chen from UC Irvine. The Old Globe will present a Juneteenth Celebration. At USD's Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, The Fowler Global Social Innovation Global Finals competition will be held
Next Sunday, at La Jolla Shores, a 2nd Annual Juneteenth BBQ will be held. There will also be a Juneteenth Celebration in La Mesa. At the Encore Event Center on Ronson Road, there will be a Ukrainian Stand for Peace Festival.
