The Participant Observer Music CD of the Month is Music of the Honey Gatherers by Paban Das Baul.

Steeped in the ancient tradition of the Bauls, the wandering spiritual musicians of Bengal, Music Of The Honey Gatherers is a beautiful and varied collection of stripped back and powerful trance-inducing Baul songs, imbued with the itinerant flavour of life on the road.

Our Book of the Month recommendation is Man Tiger by Hiromi Kawakami.

A wry, affecting tale set in a small town on the Indonesian coast, Man Tiger tells the story of two interlinked and tormented families and of Margio, a young man ordinary in all particulars except that he conceals within himself a supernatural female white tiger..

The San Diego County Fair returns after a 2-year hiatus. While it is predominantly a celebration of Americana, international-style food and performances are always part of the mix. This year Los Tigres del Norte, Ramon Ayala, and La Adictiva are slated to perform (at an additional cost for concert tickets). The Wailers, Outlaw Mariachi, and "Experience Selena" will perform at no additional cost.

Our listings continue to have a multitude of theatrical offerings. Current and opening shows include: The Taming of the Shrew at the Old Globe, In Every Generation by the San Diego Rep, In the Heights at the San Diego Musical Theatre, Mala (again, some of the shows will be in Spanish) at the Old Globe, and Mud Row at the Old Town Theatre, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in Temecula. The Musical Lempicka will open at UCSD on Tuesday. Shorter-run theatrical shows are mentioned below.

The San Diego International Fringe Festival is in full swing. All tickets are $10, and almost all the performances are being held either at the Centro Cultural de la Raza or the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre, both of which are in Balboa Park.
